Vietnam has three main networks and requires passport registration for local SIMs. Travel eSIMs sidestep that, but most are data only, so apps that verify by SMS can be awkward.
Mobile networks in Vietnam
The main networks are listed below. A travel eSIM connects to one of them or to a partner, and the provider decides which, so the network named in the plan details is worth a look if coverage matters on your route.
SIM rules and ID for visitors
Physical SIMs are described as requiring passport registration, which airport kiosks do on the spot. SIMs from street vendors that are not registered may be blocked after a few days.
Rules change
Registration and phone rules are updated by governments and operators without much notice. Check the current position with the operator or the provider before you travel.
Using a travel eSIM in Vietnam
Airport kiosks
Kiosks in the arrival halls at Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City sell and register SIMs in about five minutes, according to a travel site.
Data only means no SMS
Travel eSIMs are mostly data only, which can block SMS verification for ride-hailing and banking apps.
5G is limited to cities
Commercial 5G started in 2024 and is described as good in central districts of the big cities and limited elsewhere. Expect 4G in rural areas.
Mountain and island gaps
Coverage gaps are reported in parts of the northern mountains and some islands. Download offline maps before you go.
Check before you fly
- Check whether your plan's unlimited data has a fair-use limit.
- Download offline maps for remote stops.
- Keep your home SIM active for texts.
- You have installed the eSIM on Wi-Fi and know how to switch the line on when you land. The guide on when to buy and install covers the timing.
